The Bagan Temples and Pagodas
1) RESEARCH THE TEMPLES AND HAVE A SUNRISE, SUNSET AND VISITING SHORTLIST
Bagan is home to the 2200 temples and pagodas, and it is very unlikely that you will have time to visit each and everyone! Do your research ahead of time and make a list. Our favorite sunrise temple was and North Lowka Oushang topped our list Gouna sunset. During the period, we reduced our favorites daytime pagodas to Shwezigon Pagoda, Bupayathein and Ananda.
2) VISIT A PAGODA OR TEMPLE EVERY SUNSET AND SUNRISE YOU ARE IN BAGAN!
Not every sunrise and sunset are the same, but many in Bagan absolutely spectacular. We tucked into the two sunrises and sunsets 3 during our stay Bagan and meanwhile sunrises were exceptional, only one of our sunsets was worthy of a postcard.
If a hot air balloon ride on your bucket list of dawn balloon rides is very popular in Bagan and equally surprising, like a balloon after balloon drifts over the temples.
Sunrise in Bagan usually requires middle of the night wake up of call, so it is understandable that when the sun rises there is a mass exodus of the crowd returning back to your hotel for some well-deserved naps and breakfast. Resist the temptation! A few hours after sunrise, is an excellent opportunity to take some amazing light in the now deserted temples!
4) LOOK INSIDE THE TEMPLES AND PAGODAS!
Bagan is known for its spectacular views from the roof of the countless temples at sunrise and sunset, but inside the temples and pagodas worth a visit too. Reclining Buddha, stone carving and stone statues in abundance along the temples and pagodas of Bagan. Our favorites were Sulemani and Manuha for indoor adventures.
5) TEMPLE SELLERS
There is no way to avoid the souvenir and elephant pant sellers, which is often visited every dawn, dusk, and in the medium term, the most popular temples of Bagan. Many of them are young children who have polished their sales technique and is very easy to feel that you need to buy one and all. If it does, a firm NO goes a long way to be left alone to enjoy the experience.

6) FAMILIES WHO LOOK AFTER THE PAGODAS AND TEMPLES
Temples and pagodas are opened and closed by the families who live on nearby land and are responsible for key temple. Tipping opening sunrise and remain open to the sun, it is considered a kind gesture. Their children are also susceptible to light up the dark stairs with candle light and request a present. Accepted to give a little without their services, sunrises and experience will be a very different experience.
7) MIND YOUR HEAD!
Temples are definitely not built for anyone over 5 feet! Watch your head and wait to pass through small spaces to reach the top. There is often a lot of climbing involved in getting to the prime sunrise and sunset positions and sometimes great heights have to be scaled! I'm not a big fan of heights, but there are a lot of defensive walls, which made the experience much easier!
8) BRING A TORCH OR A HEADLAMP
A significant part of Bagan adventure takes place at dawn and at dusk. So, to put it more clearly in the dark! Flashlight or headlamp is essential to successful navigation pre-sunrise and after sunset in Bagan streets and sidewalks, stairs and dark temple. Place a flashlight on the top of your packing list!
9) DRESS CONSERVATIVELY FOR TEMPLE AND PAGODA VISITS
Most people dress conservatively and cover their shoulders and legs, in spite of the high temperatures. Knee shorts, skirts, elephant pants and t-shirts our choice of clothing. They are often recommended and used to enter the temples and pagodas. We did see short shorts and vests tops but we felt more comfortable keeping in line with the locals.
10) FLIP FLOPS ARE ESSENTIAL
Each temple and pagoda requires bare feet, flip-flops and their visitors are the easiest option. You will notice that every Burmese people legs decorated flip-flops, probably because it is not fun to play with the laces in the dust and heat! Wet wipes may also be used for cleaning the said bare feet after visiting the pagodas!
11) A BAGAN DAY TRIP: MOUNT POPA
Mount Popa is a popular day trip from Bagan. Popa Mountain is a sacred mountain temples glittering gold precariously on top of an extinct volcano. 777 steps lead to the top of the path, not only are the steps climbed in the temperature of 40 degrees, which are also filled with many monkeys in search of food!
